LHASA TO KATHMANDU
GREAT MONASTERIES OF TIBET

                                     Kathmandu-Lhasa
Lhasa, the city of the Dalai Lama, is a legendary destination. You’ll spend four full days there, exploring its hidden treasures and secrets. You’ll also visit the major Tibetan cities of Shigatse and Gyantse. By road, you’ll venture over the lofty mountain passes from Tibet to Nepal, giving you a breathtaking ringside view of our planet’s highest peaks, culminating in Mount Everest, 'the roof of the world'.

Itinerary:

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu, welcome and transfer to your hotel.
Day 2: Guided tour of Kathmandu.
Day 3: Kathmandu—Tsetang

Day 4: Tsetang—Lhasa (3,650m)
We’ll take a boat crossing, then a local bus, to visit the Samye Monastery on the shore of the Brahmaputra River. Samye is one of the holiest places in Tibet. Then, we’ll cross back over the river and continue onto Lhasa. En route, we’ll stop at Nietang to see the Great Buddha.
Day 5: Lhasa
Today, you’ll visit the Potala Palace, former residence of the Dalai Lama, and the Jokhang Temple with its Jowo statue, revered by thousands of Tibetan pilgrims. You’ll stroll through the Tibetan market in the Barkhor quarter.
Day 6: Lhasa
You’ll explore Drepung Gompa in the north of Lhasa and the Sera monastery. At certain times, you can see an outdoor display of giant Tibetan scroll-paintings (‘thangkas’) on a nearby hill and witness scenes of Tibetan religious fervor.

You’ll view the Dalai Lama’s summer palace, Norbulingka, from which he fled to India in 1959. In the afternoon, you’ll visit Ganden Monastery.
Day 8: Lhasa
Today, we’ll visit Tsurphu Monastery. In 2001, the Karmapa, who ranks number three in the Tibetan religious hierarchy, fled from this monastery (or ‘gompa’) to join the Dalai Lama in India. Occasionally, the Chinese authorities place a ban on visitors to this site. If this happens, we’ll visit another monastery instead.
Day 9: Lhasa—Gyantse (3,900m)
We’ll leave Lhasa to discover Gyantse, a city boasting some fine examples of ancient Tibetan architecture. We’ll cross the Kamba-la Pass (4,850m) to observe the beautiful Yamdrok lake with its clear blue water. We’ll also cross the Karo-la Pass (5,050m) before reaching our destination.
Day 10: Gyantse—Shigatse
This morning, you’ll view the Palkhor Monastery, a unique blend of Nepali, Chinese and Tibetan architecture. You’ll then stroll through the streets of the old town, before setting off for the Shalu Monastery with its tiled green roof.
Day 11: Shigatse—Sakya
Today, we’ll visit Tashilumpo Monastery, the seat of the Panchen Lama, who ranks second in the Tibetan religious hierarchy. In the afternoon, we’ll see the Sakya Monastery, the seat of the Sakya Order, a branch of Tibetan Buddhism.
Overnight stay in a fairly basic guest house in a former Chinese military camp.
Day 12: Sakya—Tingri
We’ll take a beautifully scenic drive, giving us a spectacular view of the tallest snowcapped peaks in the Nepal-Tibet region, including the iconic Mount Everest.
Day 13: Tingri—Nyalam

Day 14: Nyalam—Kathmandu  5
After arriving at the Zhangmu border check post, we’ll visit Milarepa’s Cave and cross the Friendship Bridge on foot. Then, we’ll make our way back into Nepal and its green terraced rice fields, which are so emblematic of the country.
